2012 Wisconsin waterfowl hunting seasons set

According to WDNR’s Kent Van Horn Wisconsin waterfowl hunters should have enjoy a good season; despite this year’s unusual weather.

GERMANTOWN, Wis. — Wisconsin will have a 60-day duck season and an extended exterior zone Canada goose season of 92 days, under a waterfowl hunting season structure the state Natural Resources Board approved at its meeting Aug. 8 in Germantown.

“Despite this year’s unusual weather patterns Wisconsin waterfowl hunters can expect a good season,” said Kent Van Horn, DNR waterfowl ecologist.

Southern Wisconsin wetlands were dry during the summer but this has resulted in good growth of plants that produce duck food so if rains return before fall, the ducks will have an excellent dinner table set for them, Van Horn said.

“Most of the waterfowl season dates for 2012 are the same as 2011 adjusted for the calendar shift. One important change proposed by duck hunters during the public involvement process was a Monday through Friday closure to the duck and goose seasons from November 5 through 9 in order to extend the end of the north zone duck season for late season hunting to November 25,” Van Horn said. “According to harvest data about 90 percent of the duck harvest in the north zone is over by November 1, so the remaining hunters are those that are very passionate about duck hunting and this change came from those hunters. Some hunters will be excited about this change while others have concerns over the closed days in early November. We will see how this season goes and we can decide next year if the hunters would like to continue with this change.”

As is the case every season, Van Horn said, successful hunters will usually be those who log the most preseason hours scouting out-of-the way potholes and waterfowl habitat, looking for new hunting opportunities away from crowds and hunting pressure. A duck hunter’s fall hunting success depends mostly upon scouting, fall water conditions and weather patterns.

“Thanks to all the folks who took time to come to our public meetings or send us their comments and participate in this season setting process,” adds Van Horn. “Waterfowl hunting is a blend of traditions, friendships and memorable days on the marsh. We wish you a successful hunt and leave you with a reminder to be safe out there in everything you do.”

The season structure includes:

  • Early September Canada goose season – Sept. 1-15
    • Daily bag of five geese
    • Youth Waterfowl Hunt – Sept. 15-16
    • Daily bag is the same as the normal season bag. Youth participants who may hunt geese should note that Sept. 15 is part of the early goose season (early season permit required, 5 bird daily bag), while the Sept. 16 falls during the regular goose season (exterior or Horicon permit required, two bird daily bag)
  • Ducks (Note: opening day shooting hours begin at 9 a.m.)
      • Northern Zone season Sept. 22-Nov. 4 and Nov. 10-25
      • Southern Zone season is Sept. 29-Oct. 7 and Oct. 13-Dec. 2
      • Mississippi River Subzone season is Sept. 22-30 and Oct. 13-Dec. 2
    • Duck bag for all seasons
      • Daily bag of six ducks total which may include no more than
        • four mallards of which only 1 may be a hen
        • three wood ducks
        • one black duck
        • two redheads
        • four scaup
        • two pintail
        • one canvasback
      • For species of duck not listed such as teal and ring-necks, the combined bag total with all other species may not exceed six ducks.
    • Coot
      • Daily bag of 15

“Overall, the status of duck and goose populations is good to excellent in 2012,” said Van Horn. Water conditions were far drier across the prairies than in 2011 but they are still near average for 2012. This good news resulted in the same liberal duck regulations we enjoyed in 2011 being offered again in 2012 with an increase in the daily bag limit for scaup from 2 to 4 ducks per day. Spring duck counts in Wisconsin were about average with variable breeding habitat (south dry, north wetter). Obviously, this dry summer has not aided our local duck production and the fall duck hunting success will depend, in part, on significant rainfall between now and then.”

Time to plan this fall’s Learn to Hunt event

Have family and friends get in the game!

A Learn To Hunt event can be the perfect way to for a novice to experience their first hunt. For more informtion contact the WDNR.

For many of us in Wisconsin, fall is the best time of year. The days are shorter, temperatures can be crisp, and the skies a brilliant blue. Geese are migrating, deer are beginning to get into the fall pre-rut patterns, and I know I’ll be making firewood for the winter.

It may be high summer now, but fall is a few short weeks away and now is the time to be thinking about how you will fit a Learn to Hunt opportunity into the busy fall. I’ll be hosting one in late September in the Madison area. A LTH can be the perfect way to for a novice to experience their first hunt. Maybe your neighbor down the block is interested. Or, what about your children’s friends? There are many ways to foster new hunting experiences, and now is the time to start planning.

Get to your club or chapter and start brainstorming about how you can build on what you did last year, or start something entirely new. Can you reach out beyond the regular hunting “choir” to introduce someone new? Someone who would not get the chance to hunt any other way? That will really go a long way to making a new hunter.

Last year the goal was 2,000 new learn-to-hunt participants. We made it! The final tally was 2,136 participants, a 23 percent increase. That is a solid, grass roots effort to pass along the hunting tradition. We’re still working toward a goal of one learn-to-hunt event in every county, but last year there were events in 60 counties — a large increase over 2010. The challenge this year is to build numbers in each county. Let’s try to add another 5 percent this fall and next spring.

You can design your own unique learn to hunt. How about a family learn-to-hunt outing? Focus on bringing the whole family out to the field and sharing our tradition and knowledge with them.

Remember, if you’re hosting a LTH pheasant, sponsors can get free pheasants from the DNR game farm for the event.

For more information on all your LTH needs, check the DNR, Learn To Hunt page.

I know you’ll take pride and step up again. As you already know, the future of hunting is up to us – those of us who hunt. Let’s get in the game!

Do you think Wisconsin should have a hunting season on sandhill cranes?

Sandhill crane season awaits introduction

Wisconsin Outdoor News contributing writer Don Bluhm wrote:

Madison — What would Aldo Leopold say about hunting sandhill cranes in Wisconsin?

Based on his writings, teachings, and today’s sandhill crane numbers, he likely would support a hunting season.

Leopold, the legendary Wisconsin environmentalist, seemed pretty sure at one point in his career, in the early 1900s, that the sandhill crane was doomed, the result of habitat loss and overharvest.

Instead, the bird’s recovery has been remarkable, and today the sandhill is considered the most numerous of all the crane subspecies in the world, with an estimated population of 600,000.

“The sandhill crane has emerged as an icon of conservation success and a changing wildlife legacy,” said Kent Van Horn, the Wisconsin DNR’s migratory bird ecologist.

DNR unveils new website

newspic1
The NEW and IMPROVED, WDNR website

MADISON – The Department of Natural Resources website, dnr.wi.gov, has undergone an extreme makeover and now it’s ready for the big reveal.

The new layout, global header, footer, topic-based landing and content pages will make it easier for those looking for information or ways to access permit applications and purchase licenses online. This new look and functionality is designed to provide a better customer experience.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with this new design,” said DNR Secretary, Cathy Stepp. “It’s been a challenge but I think it’s turned out wonderfully and I’m very interested in hearing from our customers what they think of this effort. I hope they will be pleased and as they explore the site give us feedback for ways to make it even better.”

In addition to a cleaner design and improved search functions, the new website will feature images of Wisconsin outdoors and outdoor activity in all seasons of the year and one-click links to news of the day and other popular features. Visitors will also be able to link directly to the department’s Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Flickr sites from any page.

“Our visitors will notice a cleaner, simplified, more customer and business-friendly layout,” said JD Smith, redesign project manager. “We’ve improved our search function using keywords with the goal of helping website visitors find the information they’re looking for easier and faster. We invite visitors to click on the feedback link in the footer to provide comments.”

Bears with cubs on public property need understanding and space, not food

newspic2

EAU CLAIRE – With longer days and warming temperatures, bears are moving around their winter dens and in some cases are easily visible. Sows, in particular, will stay close to their dens to care for cubs.

Wildlife biologists with the state Department of Natural Resources are asking people to give these bears a lot of space. Curiosity is natural, and seeing bears is exciting, but when people gather at these sites, the sows feel threatened, according to John Dunn, a DNR wildlife biologist.

DNR conservation wardens report that people have gotten too close to a sow with cubs in Eau Claire County and have also tossed food at bears. The bears do not need human food and this amounts more to harassment than charity, biologists said.

“In this case, you have cubs that are probably two months old,” Dunn said. “They are dependent on their mother for warmth and food and nursing. If there is a certain level of harassment, she will abandon them. We are depending on the public to leave the sow alone so she can take care of her cubs.”

DNR employees report that a similar situation in Wood County has been troublesome. In that case, with a sow and cubs easily visible in a road culvert, people have thrown food at the bears and the landowner reports seeing spotlights shined into the den at night.

Additionally, while black bears are not generally a threat to people, Dunn said, and will tolerate a fair level of harassment without becoming aggressive, there are limits. When a sow with cubs has a den in a publicly accessible location, public safety becomes an issue.

In the Eau Claire county case, the sow has already exhibited aggressive behavior indicating it is feeling threatened and doesn’t have enough space to feel safe with its cubs, Dunn reports. Fortunately, the bear has moved its cubs a short distance onto private property, still visible but less accessible.

DNR employees have increased monitoring efforts, have spoken to neighbors and have sought assistance from local law enforcement.

INSTANT SURVEY VOTE ON – POLL S706
Do you favor the adoption of statewide fishing regulations for bass, muskies and northerns?

Advisory question will ask spring hearings attendees’ opinion on simpler regs

pollpicThis year’s spring fish and game rules hearings will feature a question aimed at determining whether sportsmen favor the elimination of the current north/south zone regulations for bass, muskies and northern pike. In the Jan. 27 issue of Wisconsin Outdoor News, editor Dean Bortz writes:

“The DNR has managed bass, muskies and northern pike with different regulations for northern and southern zones for many years because spawning and growing seasons may differ from north to south. The agency is now wondering whether it still makes sense to have those zones because of variations in spawning seasons and weather patterns within the zones and from year to year.

The DNR will ask if sportsmen support the idea of going to a statewide regulation if the agency finds ‘that management zones are not biologically necessary to protect or improve certain fish populations.’”

Free Turkey Hunter Education Clinics offered, starting in late February

pollpicMADISON – Free turkey hunter education clinics will again be offered this year in Wisconsin. These free clinics are presented by volunteer instructors and are sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Clinics typically last two to three hours and are designed to cover wild turkey biology and behavior, hunting methods, regulations, safety precautions and landowner/hunter ethics, as well as tips for scoring trophy birds and a few ideas for preparing turkeys at home. The turkey hunter education clinics are for all ages and experience levels, from beginning turkey hunters interested in learning wild turkey hunting techniques to experienced hunters looking to brush up on their skills and learn new techniques.

These clinics will be held from late February through late March. Information and a listing of the dates and locations for each clinic will be available soon on the wild turkey page of the DNR website, or may be obtained by calling the DNR Customer Call Center from 7 a.m. through 10 p.m., seven days a week, at 1-888-WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463). For the latest additions or changes to the schedule, please refer to the DNR website.

Hunters may have noticed that the number of turkey hunter education clinics offered has gone down in recent years. Department staff and clinic instructors are planning how to combine the success of the turkey hunter education clinic program with that of the Learn to Hunt program. Over the years, as Wisconsin hunters have become adept at the art of turkey hunting, interest and participation in the turkey clinics have declined. However, novice turkey hunters will be well-served by the Learn to Hunt Turkey programs, which offer a valuable combination of classroom and field instruction as well as a hands-on mentored hunting experience. To learn more, visit the Learn to Hunt page of the DNR website.

Winds, fluctuating temperatures, runoff mean changing ice conditions for sturgeon season

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Sturgeon spearers anxious to start the season this Saturday are urged to check with local clubs and sport shops around Lake Winnebago and the Upper River Lakes for the latest information on ice conditions and to keep safety as the top priority when participating in this year’s season.

newspic2

As of Monday, the thickness ranged from 3 to 13 inches – and it has been constantly changing thanks to temperature fluctuations, runoff and wind. Department of Natural Resource conservation wardens in the spearing region credit local fishing clubs members for checking ice conditions and thickness.

Despite poor ice conditions now, the spearing season is set and goes on as scheduled, according to Ron Bruch, DNR sturgeon biologist as Oshkosh. The long-range forecast over the possible 16-day season (if spearers do not reach a harvest cap that would close the season earlier) includes colder temperatures that could improve ice conditions.

Sturgeon Spearing
Four generations of Schumachers — three pictured here — gather every year for sturgeon spearing season. See DNR’s multi-media sturgeon spearing news feature for more photos, videos and stories. WDNR Photo

“Working with the public, Natural Resources Board, and the legislature, the DNR sets the seasons for fishing and hunting,” Bruch says. “The anglers, spearers, and hunters who participate in these seasons are responsible for their own actions in the pursuit of their sport. Sportsmen and women make their own decisions, and may elect not to go out on the lakes to fish during thunderstorms, to hunt during ice storms, nor to spear or ice-fish on marginal or dangerous ice. Make sure you use good judgment when going out there.”

Winds can cause ice shifts which, in turn, cause cracks in the ice. Water flow from creeks that are running also help to weaken ice in spots.
